In Appendix 20, the author says: “immediate reinforcement or reward is important in the learning process.” But this is a stunning claim and a dangerous idea, not least because it negates her efforts to debunk Skinnerian mastery learning programs. Rewards have to be intrinsic in order for education to be authentic and fruitful (and if we can come to terms with this exigency, then we don’t get to dictate when the reward makes itself evident; it comes when it comes of its own accord). She also talks, in the Afterword, about the need to hang on the walls of every school and public building the Ten Commandments. That too, in my view, is a dangerous idea, because you can’t command good behavior without detriment to the very thing that she’s trying to call forth: morality. Only affectional security, the cultivation of the imaginal psyche and emotional freedom are likely to foster morality. Finally, also in the Afterword, she says that “Our nation did not become great through group action.” First, the U.S. is not a great nation, though its people can become great if they put their minds to it (but if this ever happens, they would need to be humble about it). Second, any of its meaningful past accomplishments are due more to group action than to individual action (see, e.g., Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States). But Iserbyt’s apprehension about group action is a pervasive one, inspired largely by people like Ayn Rand, whose toxic pedagogy has poisoned so many minds.
