In SR 7, it was said that Gabor Maté’s In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts is a great book but that it contains some significant problems. Revision: he shares some useful information and knowledge when it comes to the anatomy of addiction, and he reproduces some valuable insights, but he himself is not insightful as a result of the alleged fact that he’s empathically disabled, as I hope to show in the future, along with providing evidence for other charges.

In my view, the contributions by Peck, Guggenbuhl-Craig, Kopp, Pierrakos, Whitmont and Wilbur, among the ones I’ve read, contain serious flaws. There’s a short excerpt from a text by Rollo May that seems innocuous, but his other texts do reveal very serious problems. Critical comments may appear in the future for each. But since Whitmont’s contribution seems to be the most treacherous, to see this more clearly it will help to also read “The Destiny Concept in Psychotherapy” (also by him), which contains its own red flags, especially when juxtaposed with Glen Slater’s “A Mythology of Bullets,” and if we take into consideration the fact that the creative potential in us does not have a masculine character. Finally, the fact that the boot camp mentality and other problems are subtly evidencing themselves in the volume edited by Z & A does not make it less hard to perceive the man as a Jungian analyst, even if there are merits in some of his ideas and analyses.

Most of the stuff that I had saved in SR8 for the future, including critical comments for a number of past postings, are irretrievably lost. So there’s no SR8 to post on my site in the future. Which in turn means that the routine has been broken to a large extent, since I can’t recall most of the stuff that I had saved. Nor can I remember the comments that I had saved, for the most part. Postings will, however, continue on this blog, but likely less frequently and/or in less quantity than before. And I guess there’s a chance that a new SR8 will be created in the future, even if this doesn’t seem too likely at this point.

May is not what he makes himself appear to be in this transcript, for a very careful reading of other texts by him reveals the fact that he was a coercive therapist, however subtly so. But it’s actually the form of therapy itself that is the problem, hence existential psychotherapy is a misnomer. In my view, it can’t be said that it’s even minimally concerned with questions of freedom, once the lip service is discounted.

I think what the authors say in the last sentence is questionable. The majority of Germans back then probably were not clinically psychopathological in a way that would have warranted incapacitating them. But a reading of Miller’s For Your Own Good does suggest that there was psychopathology among them nevertheless, in the sense of suffering from PTSD without necessarily knowing it, apart from the economic and ideological factors that whipped up those who participated in the Holocaust into a murderous frenzy because of the posttraumatic stress suffered by those who were abused and neglected as children, as most or all of them were likely to have been.

If the claim about the investments is true, then I don’t think it really matters if the person who is doing the revealing is a detractor of Chomsky or someone who is expressing genuine concerns about a double standard, because the decision to actively invest one’s capital in the very system that one claims has been causing unlimited suffering in the world is disgraceful, in my view. Since I don’t know if the claim is true, of course I have no choice but to use the ‘if, then’ sentence form.

On page 135, the author quotes Nathanson, who says that "[t]he entire system of psychotherapy, as we had been taught it, worked only if we overlooked the shame that we produced day in and day out in our therapeutic work..." But this totally contradicts what Schore says on p. 128: "the right hemisphere is dominant in treatment, and ... psychotherapy is not the 'talking cure' but the affect communicating and regulating cure." This claim is neither factual nor is it even an ideal among an overwhelming number of therapists, given the preponderance of behaviorist approaches (a left hemisphere "cure" predicated on animal psychology) in the field, approaches doomed to fail in terms of right-brain affect regulation. Schore has a lot of useful insights to offer, but there are times when he isn't sufficiently careful.

If you decide to read the book (entitled From the Wrong Side) from which the article by Adolf Guggenbuhl-Craig (“Creativity, Spontaneity, Independence,” posted here recently) was excerpted, be careful, as the author’s views are reactionary, not least because he did not face his own crimes with unflinching eyes and take responsibility for them; he was merely using the garb of Jungian analysis to dishonestly frame and rationalize his very unsavory past. So in a real sense he was a charlatan, in my view, even if the basic problem was simply lack of initiation.
